Legacy Muay Thai Fighting Championships - Houston, Texas
Friday, June 11th 2010
Mick Maynard – Promoter
USMF – Sanctioning Body
A warm humid evening in Houston, the location was a nightclub that now strictly does events. With the ring positioned in the middle of the club, there was seating all around as well as on the stage directly across from the ring and standing room on the upper levels...no matter where you were in the place...you had a good view. VIP tables were offered dinner catered by Thai Gourmet Restaurant which is owned and operated by Kru Pong who also owns and runs his Muay Thai gym right next door and had 3 fighters on the card. From what we hear “It's the best Thai Food in Houston”. A mixed crowd of all ages was in attendance, regardless of age they were all there for the same reason and were pumped for a night of action packed Muay Thai bouts.
With Texas rules requiring that fighters get a full 2 minutes rest in between rounds guaranteed the fighters enough time to rest and come roaring back out of their corners. Mick Maynard and the Legacy Fighting Championships team put on a great show and we were happy to be a part of it. All in all it was a great night of fights in Houston.
Bout 1 – Brandon was aggressive right out of the gate. However, Ricky matched the aggressiveness. Brandon landed a kick to the face but Ricky caught Brandon with a flying knee. It was apparent not only to the crowd but to Ricky's corner that this had elements of an MMA match as his corner shouted “Watch it bro this isn't MMA”. Ricky continuously tried to work Brandon's inside leg.
Bout 2 – Mike matched what Craig threw at him plus some. Mike was a bit more cockier in the ring, dancing in between rounds but was a good sport. Craig tried to work the elbows with little success. Both fighters clearly tired, fought to the very end yet Craig was able to drop Michael several times. Michael was able to connect.
Bout 3 – This fight started out well with John keeping up with his opponent. Akira started with a hard teep and then worked John with knee after knee. John caught Akiras kick and dropped him but Akira came back with relentless knees. Both fighters were quick and pushed towards one another. Round 3 Akira continued with those knees as the crowd chanted “Kira” he threw in some spinning elbows as well in which one of them landed right before the bell rung.
Bout 4 – Joey had some strong kicks as they traded back and forth. Brakke came out full force with spinning kicks and one punch after another. Joey continued with the knees while Braake could not match. Braake went down with 3 knees in a row.
Bout 5 – John had great knees while Terrence looked as if he was ready for the ground instead. However, Terrence did make some nice connections to his opponents face. Terrence came out of his corner in round 2 refreshed making an attempt at kicks and kneeing while in a clinch. His boxing seemed better than the last round. John came in with a spinning kick. Terrence attempted to keep John against the ropes. Terrence got him with an elbow and John answered that with a flying knee.
Bout 6 – Toe to toe, back and forth...Levi stunned his opponent twice and landed a nice Superman Punch while John landed a nice kick to the side. This was a non stop slug fest as the crowd cheered for Jose.
Bout 7 – Both fighters came right out of the gate throwing knees and were engaged in a clinch for most of round 1 with Nethaneel working at breaking free. Nethaneel bounced off the ring ropes and connected an elbow to his opponents face. They both traded kicks to the body but Nathaneel tried working Brannen's legs.
Bout 8 – John landed a nice spinning back kick. Romel later caught his opponents leg but was unable to drop him. Romel landed some good kicks to the body and continued to move towards his opponent. John tried to work Romel's head with punch after punch. Rommel caught John in the temple which dropped him but he got right back up. Round 3 Romel came out of his corner fully charged and worked some good knees while John caught Romel with an uppercut. With each second that drew near the final bell both fighters we're quickly running out of gas.
Bout 9 – Kirk came out swinging against the crowned “Most Exciting Fighter in Houston” Alex Black. Kirk dropped Alex and off loaded some vicious kicks but Alex came charging right back. The power behind the kicks that each of the fighters unloaded were amazing! The slaps could be heard echoing throughout the building. Both fighters moved toward each other, no signs of backing down from either corner. The crowd definitely was not in agreement of the Split Decision in favor of Kirk and let it be known.
Bout 10 – Alex caught a leg and brought Cody to the ground in the first round. Cody worked some great kicks, however he slipped and popped his shoulder out of place. The crowd watch as we were all wondering what was going to happen next. The pain was apparent in his face. We all watched as he popped it back into place and kept on fighting! No one can question the heart that this fighter has. Cody swept the leg from under Alex on more than one occasion in round 2. Alex opened up round 3 with knee after knee.
